Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently undertaking a two-day inspection of the Northern Division to assess the proposed upgrades of the roads as part of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative is backed by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

With a projected budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is positioned to be a pivotal element in improving Fiji’s infrastructure under the BRI framework. Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of integrating local community insights to ensure that these enhancements not only improve transport connectivity but also create job opportunities for local residents throughout the construction phase.

During the tour, key segments of the project inspected include the 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo and the 35 kilometers from Nabalelebale to Dogoru, which forms part of the Wailevu West Coast Road. The Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the Prime Minister, offering detailed information regarding the technical and logistical aspects of the project.

The delegation also participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, who highlighted the region’s economic prospects that will significantly benefit from enhanced road infrastructure. Ambassador Robert Lee expressed his approval of the project, underlining its importance in bolstering infrastructure and facilitating regional growth. Notably, the upgraded roads are expected to benefit vital sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydro-power, while improving access for rural communities.

This development signals a positive step forward not only for the enhancement of infrastructure but also for the economic growth of Fiji through local engagement and job creation. The focus on improving connectivity is a hopeful reminder of the potential benefits such projects hold for rural communities, aligning with broader developmental goals.
