The Fiji Police Force has reported a troubling surge in serious road accidents this year, with 13 incidents recorded. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, emphasizes the urgent need for road safety awareness, particularly as the school year approaches.
SSP Divuana raised concerns over the high number of serious accidents, stating that 11 out of the 13 incidents stemmed from drivers losing control of their vehicles—primarily due to speeding and fatigue. He called for drivers to reassess their travel habits, promoting careful planning and frequent breaks during long trips. “Safety must be your top concern,” he insisted, urging drivers not to rush.
Encouragingly, there have been no fatalities recorded so far this year, contrasting with two fatalities during the same period in 2024. This positive development could be associated with ongoing efforts by the Fiji Police and road safety advocates, who have actively been promoting responsible driving through various community initiatives and reminders.
Maintaining vigilance on the roads remains crucial, especially with more community events expected that could increase traffic. SSP Divuana reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits, emphasizing that speeding puts all road users at risk. The police continue to issue speeding tickets regularly, underscoring the need for greater awareness and personal responsibility among drivers.
In summary, while the rise in serious accidents is alarming, the absence of fatalities provides a hopeful outlook for road safety. With community involvement and adherence to road safety principles, Fiji can continue to foster a safer driving environment for everyone. Let us all prioritize our responsibilities on the road to protect ourselves and others.
