The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is making significant strides in enhancing road safety by acquiring additional portable speed cameras. This initiative was revealed by LTA board chairman Inosi Kuridrani during the recent commissioning of the Nadi branch office in Waimalika. He stated that the acquisition is part of a joint effort with the Fiji Roads Authority to improve traffic regulation enforcement, particularly on the new roads planned for development.

Mr. Kuridrani highlighted that the implementation of these speed cameras aligns with the LTA’s ongoing efforts to curb speeding and reckless driving, which has been a contributing factor to high road fatalities in the country. In 2023, speeding was responsible for approximately 40 percent of the total 66 road fatalities reported that year, pointing to an urgent need for intensified enforcement measures.

Furthermore, the LTA is exploring the establishment of a GPS monitoring system for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) permit holders. This system aims to ensure compliance and eliminate illegal rides, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to maintaining road safety standards.

Kuridrani also expressed gratitude to Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau for the provision of ten new vehicles, which will enhance LTA’s service delivery capabilities. These developments reflect a proactive approach by the LTA to improve traffic management and ensure safer roads for all users.

In summary, the LTA’s collaboration with the Fiji Roads Authority and the introduction of portable speed cameras signal a hopeful step towards a future with improved road safety and reduced traffic-related fatalities in Fiji. The focus on robust enforcement and innovative monitoring solutions could pave the way for a more responsible driving culture, ultimately protecting lives on the roads.
