The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has intensified its efforts to improve road safety in Fiji, with 14 driving school permits revoked due to non-compliance with new regulations. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa announced that these measures aim to ensure higher standards for driving instructors, which is vital for cultivating responsible driving behavior among learners.
Rokosawa articulated a vision for a safer driving environment, expressing optimism that the tightened qualification standards will help reduce hazardous driving behaviors. He emphasized that applicants seeking to obtain a driving instructor permit must meet stringent requirements, including having diploma qualifications, a minimum age, and a clean driving record. This recent crackdown mirrors the LTA’s broader strategy, which has recently seen the cancellation of 62 driver licenses and the suspension of 21 others due to reckless driving practices, as outlined in previous reports.
Rokosawa previously highlighted the authority’s commitment to road safety, noting that counsels and warnings have been issued to instill a culture of accountability among drivers. In light of ongoing efforts, the LTA has organized counseling sessions aimed at educating offenders about their responsibilities on the road.
