The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is set to enhance road safety in Fiji with the imminent deployment of 12 new portable speed cameras across the nation. This initiative is a critical part of their strategy to improve traffic enforcement, particularly in high-risk areas, as speeding continues to be a significant contributor to road accidents.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been over 7,800 speeding violations recorded on Viti Levu using existing portable units. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa asserted that the rollout of these cameras is aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors by acting as both enforcement mechanisms and deterrents. The new mobile cameras will function during scheduled patrols as well as random operations, providing real-time data transmission and high-definition imaging for a more efficient response to emerging traffic issues.
Rokosawa emphasized that this initiative is not motivated by revenue generation but is solely focused on minimizing accidents and fatalities on the roads. The LTA is also planning a public education campaign to encourage safer driving habits among the community. This dual approach—enhanced enforcement combined with increased public awareness—underscores the LTA’s commitment to fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance while driving.
Previous efforts, including the installation of fixed speed and red-light cameras in major urban areas, have laid the groundwork for these new initiatives. Authorities remain hopeful that the ongoing and new measures will lead to a significant reduction in traffic incidents, ultimately paving the way for safer journeys across Fiji’s roadways.
This proactive step reflects an overall commitment to improve road safety, and it is anticipated that with these advances, communities can look forward to a more responsible driving environment, where the ratio of fatalities decreases, making Fiji’s roads safer for everyone.
