The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has made significant enhancements to its offshore vehicle inspection protocols, aiming to bolster safety standards and regulatory compliance in the second-hand vehicle market. Chairperson Inosi Kuridrani stated that these measures will ensure that imported vehicles conform to safety regulations before they reach Fijian shores, ultimately offering greater transparency to consumers.

To implement these changes, the LTA will collaborate with various governmental agencies including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, the Consumer Council of Fiji, and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji. This collaboration is designed to tighten oversight and streamline the inspection process.

For vehicles imported from Australia and New Zealand, the traditional physical inspections will be replaced with a simplified verification process. This approach aims to reduce costs and condense compliance reporting into a more manageable format. Kuridrani emphasized that this improvement means buyers will have a clearer understanding of a vehicle’s condition prior to purchase, thereby preventing unsafe cars from entering Fiji’s road network.

An additional aspect of the new framework is the introduction of an online platform, which will allow consumers to access vehicle history more comprehensively. This enhanced monitoring system is expected to increase dealer compliance before vehicles are sold, thereby prioritizing public safety.

The LTA anticipates that these revisions will not only improve consumer confidence but also ensure that only safe, roadworthy vehicles make their way into the Fijian market. By focusing on safety compliance, the LTA is taking a proactive stance in protecting both consumers and road users alike.

This new initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader commitment to road safety, reflecting a continuous effort to modernize vehicle regulations and promote responsible practices in the automotive sector. The LTA’s enhanced inspection procedures are set to foster a safer driving environment, ultimately benefiting all who travel on Fiji’s roads.
