The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a warning to road users across the nation to remain cautious as severe weather, characterized by heavy rainfall and flash flooding, continues to affect many regions. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that these challenging conditions pose significant risks to road safety, making it crucial for both motorists and pedestrians to exercise additional care when traveling.
Rokosawa emphasized the importance of vigilance during such adverse weather. He pointed out that heavy rain, coupled with reduced visibility and potential flooding, creates hazardous conditions. He urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas, advising them to stay updated on weather warnings and road closures.
Despite ongoing warnings, Rokosawa expressed concern that some drivers have been ignoring safety measures by speeding and driving recklessly through floodwaters. He affirmed the Authority’s commitment to taking action against such offenders, emphasizing that penalties would be enforced to deter dangerous driving behaviors.
Drivers are advised to adhere to speed limits, adjust their driving according to the conditions, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, use headlights during periods of low visibility, and plan trips to accommodate potential weather-related interruptions.
In light of the current weather situation, Rokosawa warned against taking unnecessary risks around flooded areas. He stressed that even shallow floodwaters could be hazardous, urging anyone encountering a flooded road to turn back and seek an alternative route.
The LTA is collaborating closely with the Fiji Police Force, the Fiji Roads Authority, municipal councils, and other stakeholders to monitor road conditions and enforce safety measures. As public safety remains the Authority’s top priority, they are enhancing emergency response capabilities and encouraging citizens to stay informed through reliable weather sources and local news for real-time updates on road conditions.
The heavy rains have resulted in the temporary closure of LTA branches in several locations, including Rakiraki, Ba, Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua, and Levuka.
