Fiji’s Road Safety Efforts Get a Boost with New Vehicle Donation

During a handover ceremony at the LTA Headquarters in Valelevu, Nasinu, the Fiji Land Transport Authority (LTA) received a valuable vehicle donation from the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). This donation is a testament to the strong partnership between the two organizations and their commitment to ensuring road safety across Fiji.

LTA Board Chairman Inosi Kuridrani highlighted the importance of the vehicle in supporting the LTA’s national outreach and education initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety awareness. He emphasized that every life saved through improved education and enforcement is viewed as a significant achievement.

“The new vehicle will be a vital asset in our efforts, enabling LTA teams to engage with more communities and communicate important road safety messages to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians,” Mr. Kuridrani stated. He also noted that the transfer of the vehicle symbolizes the strength of the alliance with the FRA, reinforcing their joint mission for safer roads in Fiji. He pointed out that road safety is a collective responsibility that can be better addressed through collaboration.

Mr. Kuridrani mentioned that the partnership between the LTA and FRA focuses on reducing traffic accidents and fatalities by promoting safe driving practices, increasing public awareness, and enhancing road infrastructure.

Atunaisa Nayago, chairman of the FRA Board, reiterated the significance of such collaborations. He expressed pride in supporting the LTA through this vehicle donation, which reflects their commitment to fostering inter-agency cooperation and ensuring the LTA has the necessary resources to effectively fulfill its responsibilities.

“The enhancement of their fleet contributes to improved road safety, better transport management, and overall enhanced service for the people of Fiji,” Mr. Nayago added.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa explained that the newly acquired vehicle would enable the agency to expand its reach to more towns, workplaces, schools, and public areas. He shared that from January to July 2024, the LTA conducted 1,546 awareness campaigns nationwide, reaching a total of 260,317 individuals, including 390 school-based initiatives benefiting 56,282 students.

The outreach efforts included various initiatives such as public events, office programs, driver roadside awareness campaigns, passenger awareness campaigns, and pedestrian initiatives, highlighting the LTA’s commitment to road safety and community engagement.

Mr. Rokosawa affirmed the Authority’s ongoing dedication to reducing traffic accidents and fatalities through sustained education, strict enforcement, and strong partnerships with agencies like the FRA. The addition of this vehicle is expected to enhance the effectiveness of their road safety programs even further.
