Fiji’s Road Safety Crisis: What You Need to Know

Fiji has reported 13 serious road accidents so far this year, raising significant alarms regarding road safety as the school year approaches. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, who directs Traffic and Transport Control, pointed out that the majority of these accidents—specifically 11 out of the 13—were caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles, predominantly due to speeding and fatigue.

SSP Divuana emphasized the need for a proactive approach to road safety, especially with increased traffic expected as schools reopen. He urged drivers to prioritize safety, stating, “If drivers can plan their trips well, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing, they can significantly enhance their own safety as well as that of others.” The senior officer called on the public to approach driving with a heightened sense of responsibility.

A positive note in this year’s report is the absence of fatalities; unlike last year where two deaths were recorded during the same period, this year has seen no such losses. This improvement suggests that ongoing road safety campaigns and the increased awareness among drivers are beginning to take effect.

To support these efforts, the Fiji Police Force will maintain a visible presence on the roads for traffic checks and to educate drivers on safe driving practices. Officers encourage the use of Community Posts along highways as essential rest stops that can contribute to reducing fatigue-related accidents.

In summary, while the number of serious accidents presents a concern, the lack of fatalities offers a hopeful perspective on road safety improvements. With collective efforts from both law enforcement and the community, Fiji can strive to continue reducing accidents, ensuring safer roads for all users. The commitment to road safety from both authorities and the public is crucial in fostering a more secure driving environment as the community prepares for the changes that come with the new school year.
