Concerns about road safety in Fiji have intensified as reports indicate 13 serious road accidents have occurred so far in 2025, particularly alarming with the school year approaching. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, has highlighted that most of these incidents—11 out of the 13—were linked to drivers losing control of their vehicles. The primary causes identified are speeding and fatigue.
SSP Divuana has urged drivers to prioritize safety by planning their trips effectively, taking necessary breaks during long journeys, and avoiding the rush that often leads to dangerous driving. “Safety must be your top concern,” he emphasized, stressing the importance of being responsible on the roads, especially as traffic is expected to increase with the return of students to school.
In a rather encouraging development, the Fiji Police Force has recorded no fatalities related to these accidents thus far this year. This is a significant improvement compared to two fatalities recorded during the same period last year. This trend suggests a positive impact from ongoing road safety campaigns aimed at reducing reckless driving and fostering protective driving behaviors among the public.
Police traffic officers will remain actively present on the roads to conduct checks and raise awareness. They encourage drivers to utilize Community Posts along highways for breaks, reinforcing the importance of rest in ensuring road safety.
In summary, while the 13 serious accidents have raised alarm bells, the lack of fatalities offers a hopeful perspective on road safety improvements in Fiji. Continuous efforts and collaboration between law enforcement and the community are vital. There is optimism that with greater awareness and adherence to safety guidelines, the trend of zero fatalities can be sustained, contributing to safer roads for all.
