Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported in Fiji this year, raising significant concerns about safety as the school year is about to begin. The Director of Traffic and Transport Control, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitilei Divuana, emphasized the urgent need to prioritize road safety in light of the increase in traffic expected with the start of the school season.
SSP Divuana expressed concern that a majority of these accidents—11 out of the 13—were linked to drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily attributed to speeding and fatigue. To mitigate these risks, he urged drivers to properly plan their trips, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing. “Safety must be your top concern,” he stressed.
In a positive development, there have been no fatalities recorded from road accidents in 2025 so far, a significant improvement compared to two deaths reported during the same period last year. This decline underscores the potential impact of ongoing road safety campaigns and public awareness initiatives that aim to reduce reckless driving behavior.
The Fiji Police continue to maintain an active presence on the roads, conducting traffic checks and providing awareness to drivers. They encourage drivers to utilize Community Posts for much-needed rest during long trips, reinforcing the message that prioritizing safety is vital.
As the community prepares for an increase in vehicle traffic with the upcoming school year, it is crucial for all road users to heed safety reminders and foster a culture of responsible driving practices. Through collective efforts and a commitment to road safety, there is hope for further reductions in accidents and a safer driving environment for everyone in Fiji.
In summary, while the number of serious accidents is concerning, the absence of fatalities provides an optimistic outlook for road safety moving forward. The collaboration between law enforcement and the community can enhance safety on the roads, benefiting all who travel in Fiji.
