Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported in Fiji this year, raising significant concerns about safety as the school year approaches. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, highlighted the pressing need for heightened road safety awareness, particularly in light of the anticipated increase in traffic.
SSP Divuana expressed alarm over the high accident rate, noting that out of the 13 incidents, 11 were due to drivers losing control of their vehicles, a situation often linked to speeding and fatigue. To counter these troubling trends, he emphasized that drivers should plan their trips carefully, take regular breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing. “Safety must be your top concern,” he urged, calling on all road users to prioritize their well-being and the safety of others.
In a positive turn, there have been no fatalities recorded from these serious accidents so far this year, a significant improvement compared to two deaths during the same period last year. This decline suggests that ongoing road safety campaigns and increased public awareness may be making a difference.
The Fiji Police Force is committed to enhancing road safety through regular traffic checks and educational efforts aimed at promoting safe driving practices. SSP Divuana encouraged drivers to utilize Community Posts along highways for necessary rest stops, further stressing the need for responsible driving behaviors.
As the community gears up for the return of the school season, it is vital that all drivers remain vigilant and cautious. With collective efforts from both police and the public, there is hope that Fiji can continue to reduce the number of serious accidents and maintain the positive trend of zero fatalities. This commitment to road safety will foster a safer driving environment for everyone on Fiji’s roads.
