The Fiji Police Force has issued a renewed appeal to all road users to adhere to speed limits following a devastating car accident that claimed the lives of Rup Chand, 77, and his son Rakesh Chand, 52. The incident occurred last Wednesday in Lovu, Lautoka, as the family was en route to visit a hospitalized relative. Three other passengers who were in the vehicle at the time suffered injuries and are currently in stable condition at Lautoka Aspen Hospital.
Rakesh’s son, Ravitesh, expressed his shock and sorrow, revealing that although he was supposed to accompany his father and grandfather, work commitments led him to allow them to travel alone. “I did not expect that would be the last time I would be seeing them alive,” he lamented. Following a postmortem examination, the funeral for both men will take place soon.
Fiji’s road death toll now stands at 35, which is an increase from the previous year’s tally of 32 at the same time. Police authorities are emphasizing the critical need for safe driving habits, reminding drivers that a single reckless decision can lead to fatal consequences.
This tragic case resonates with previous accidents involving families in Lautoka, highlighting the ongoing struggle with road safety in the region. With recent trends indicating a slight uptick in fatalities, the call for increased awareness measures is more crucial than ever.
While the heart-wrenching impact of such events is undeniable, there is a hopeful note in community calls for a culture of safety. Enhanced discussions around traffic regulations and the commitment to road safety can pave the way towards fewer tragedies in the future. As Fiji continues to navigate these challenges, collective efforts toward safer driving practices can contribute to more secure roads for everyone.
