Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported on Fiji’s roads this year, raising significant concerns about safety as the school year approaches. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, emphasized the pressing need for heightened road safety awareness due to the anticipated increase in traffic.

Out of the total accidents, 11 involved drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily linked to speeding and fatigue. SSP Divuana urged drivers to prioritize safety, especially during this busy time, by planning their trips effectively, taking regular breaks during long journeys, and avoiding the rush that can lead to dangerous driving. “Your safety must come first,” he asserted.

Encouragingly, there have been no fatalities recorded from these serious accidents thus far this year, a sharp contrast to the two fatalities reported during the same period last year. This improvement suggests that ongoing road safety campaigns and community awareness initiatives are beginning to yield positive results.

The Fiji Police Force is committed to maintaining road safety by conducting regular traffic checks and educating drivers about safe driving practices. They encourage drivers to make use of Community Posts along highways for necessary rest stops, reinforcing the message that prioritizing safety is vital.

As the community gears up for the return of the school season, it is crucial for all road users to remain vigilant and cultivate responsible driving habits. With cooperative efforts from both law enforcement and the public, there is hope for continued improvements in road safety, ensuring that Fiji’s roads become even safer for everyone.

In summary, while the number of serious accidents this year raises alarms, the absence of fatalities provides an encouraging sign for future road safety. Through collective adherence to safety principles, there is optimism that Fiji can work towards a safer driving environment for all.
