Thirteen serious road accidents have been recorded in Fiji this year, raising alarms about road safety, especially as the school year is set to begin. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, the Director of Traffic and Transport Control, emphasized the pressing need to prioritize safety on the roads due to the increased traffic expected in the coming weeks.
“The high number of severe accidents, primarily caused by drivers losing control often due to speeding and fatigue, is concerning,” stated SSP Divuana. Out of the 13 accidents, 11 incidents were attributed to vehicles veering off the road, largely a result of reckless driving behaviors.
To combat these trends, police are calling on drivers to effectively plan their trips. “Taking breaks on long journeys and avoiding the rushing that leads to unsafe driving is essential. Your safety should always come first,” added SSP Divuana. Traffic officers will be present to conduct checks and raise awareness among drivers about the importance of adhering to road safety rules.
Encouragingly, there have been no fatalities recorded so far this year, a significant improvement compared to two fatalities during the same period last year. This highlights the potential benefits of ongoing road safety campaigns and the collaboration between the public and law enforcement.
Going forward, maintaining this positive trend relies heavily on community cooperation. Responsible driving practices, time management, and the willingness of drivers to heed safety reminders will be crucial in ensuring a safer driving environment for all.
In summary, while the number of serious accidents raises concerns, the absence of fatalities provides a ray of hope. With collective efforts from authorities and the community, there is potential for continued improvement in road safety across Fiji.
