Tevita Waqatoga, the manager of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) in Savusavu, has highlighted a significant shift in the authority’s approach to road management. Under the current administration, there is no longer a distinction between FRA-maintained roads and those considered non-FRA. This change is seen as a positive development aimed at ensuring that previously unattended areas are now receiving the attention they need.

Waqatoga noted that certain regions had suffered from neglect for years due to their classification, but this is changing. The FRA has already commenced improvement work on 2.5 kilometers of Vucivuci Road in Savusavu based on community requests, indicating a responsive approach to local needs. He emphasized that the FRA is committed to enhancing access and infrastructure across all communities and plans to follow up on further requests to their office.

This renewed focus on infrastructure improvement mirrors broader discussions around the need for effective management of existing road networks in Fiji. Concerns have been raised about the prioritization of new road construction over essential maintenance, with calls from various stakeholders, including the Leader of the Opposition, for greater accountability and emphasis on existing assets.

The FRA’s commitment to addressing long-standing road issues is a hopeful sign for the residents of Savusavu and communities throughout Fiji. This strategic shift aims not only to improve road safety but also to foster a more unified community response to infrastructure needs, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for all citizens.

In alignment with ongoing governmental efforts to bolster infrastructure reliability amid funding and operational challenges, these actions by the FRA reflect a proactive approach to sustainable road management. As the FRA addresses these pressing issues, there is optimism for safer, more accessible travel across the nation, benefiting both individual residents and the broader economy as Fiji continues to advance its infrastructural development.
