The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has been allocated a significant budget of $388 million for the 2025-2026 National Budget, marking a $37 million increase compared to the previous year. This allocation was announced in Parliament by Finance Minister Biman Prasad, who emphasized the government’s commitment to improving Fiji’s road infrastructure.
Of the total budget, approximately $120 million is specifically designated for road maintenance, ensuring that existing roads are kept in good condition, while $74 million will focus on road renewals and resealing efforts. In an initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility, particularly for rural communities, $30 million has been reserved for the sealing and upgrading of rural roads.
Key projects highlighted include $5 million set aside for the tar sealing of Kavanagasau Road and various improvements to Biausevu Road in Sigatoka, alongside enhancements to critical roads in Nausori such as Vuci, Naduru, and Koronivia. An additional $23 million is earmarked for developing footpaths and bus shelters, which will help enhance safety for pedestrians and improve public transport infrastructure.
The increased funding reflects a broader commitment from the government to construct safer, more reliable transportation networks, which are essential for fostering economic growth and enhancing connectivity for all Fijians. Moreover, an ongoing study is being conducted to address urban traffic congestion, particularly on routes between Nadi and Lautoka, and Lami-Suva-Nausori, aiming to inform long-term transportation planning and improve traffic flow.
This proactive approach to infrastructure investment not only aims to rectify previous challenges faced by the FRA but also signifies a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s transport network, enhancing quality of life and economic resilience throughout the nation.
