In a concerning trend, Fiji has witnessed a total of 296 road fatalities over the past five years, with last year marking a record high of 83 deaths. These alarming statistics were shared by the Fiji Police Force during the National Transport Infrastructure Consultative Forum.
Deputy Police Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga highlighted the sharp increase in road accidents, noting that 2021 saw 2,643 recorded incidents, which resulted in 134 serious injuries and 25 fatalities. This upward spiral continued into 2022, with 3,096 accidents leading to 147 injuries and 44 deaths. The situation deteriorated further in 2023, when reported accidents soared to 3,667. While serious injuries experienced a slight decline to 130 that year, the number of fatalities escalated dramatically to 78.
Looking ahead to 2024, although the deaths decreased slightly to 66, the number of total accidents surged to a staggering 4,890, resulting in 264 serious injuries. However, the most alarming statistics were recorded last year, with the Fiji Police Force reporting an unprecedented 5,541 accidents. Among these, 220 incidents were classified as serious, contributing to the tragic total of 83 fatalities.
According to Lutunauga, the primary factors behind these incidents remain consistent: speeding, careless driving, pedestrian negligence, and drunk driving continue to pose serious threats despite ongoing warnings. The Police Force emphasized that the data underscores preventable trends, suggesting that a collaborative approach from various sectors—including law enforcement, education, engineering, and emergency response—is essential to effectively tackle this crisis and save lives on the roads.
The community remains hopeful that with increased awareness and concerted efforts, these tragic statistics can be reversed, fostering a safer environment for all road users in Fiji.
