Fiji’s young triathletes are working tirelessly to qualify for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games, under the guidance of coach Trisa Cheer-Dunn. This squad, comprising three boys and three girls aged 15-19, is not only training in the demanding sport of triathlon but also balancing their academic responsibilities. Cheer-Dunn emphasizes that triathlon is among the most challenging endurance sports and highlights the physical and mental fortitude required from the athletes.
The selection process is rigorous, with three trials completed and two more pending. The final qualification event will be held on April 20 in Vuda, where the final squad will be determined. Some of these athletes are pushing themselves for their first international competition, while others are seasoned in the triathlon world. A notable aspect of this year’s trials is the focus on aquathlon, which consists of a run-swim-run format. This shift has heightened the competition levels as athletes aim to secure their spots.
Despite logistical challenges in organizing training sessions due to the athletes being dispersed across various regions, Cheer-Dunn remains optimistic about their potential. She is not only looking forward to their immediate performance at the Mini Games but is determined to develop these young athletes for the 2027 Pacific Games.
This pursuit reflects a broader narrative seen in various sports across Fiji, as established in similar initiatives among swimmers and athletes gearing up for the Pacific Mini Games. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by these young athletes shed light on the potential for Fiji to enhance its standing in regional sports. The commitment to hard work and resilience promises a hopeful outlook as they strive to represent their country with pride and demonstrate their capabilities on a larger stage.
