The Baby Pearls, Fiji’s under-21 netball team, are on the brink of finalizing their squad for the upcoming World Youth Netball Cup in Gibraltar, set to take place from September 19 to 28. Team manager Lusiana Rakavono stated that the selection process for the final 15-member squad, from an extended group of 27 players—10 of whom are based overseas—will conclude next month.
Among the overseas players, the squad includes five from Australia and five from New Zealand, reinforcing the team’s depth and talent. Rakavono expressed confidence in the players’ potential, stating, “The girls know what they’re expected to do on the court… I believe they’re all vying for the spot for the final 15.”
In preparation for the competition, the Baby Pearls will host the New South Wales Fijians and Blaze teams, providing invaluable match experience before the big event. Rakavono mentioned the importance of these games for the players’ development, emphasizing that further matches will be scheduled after the final team selection to enhance their readiness for the World Cup.
Training has been dynamic, including scrimmages with the men’s team, which have proven instrumental in sharpening the players’ skills and intensity. Rakavono shared that some players have opted not to participate due to other commitments, leaving the squad with 17 local players.
The Baby Pearls embody the growing talent in Fijian netball, and their preparations indicate a hopeful outlook as they aspire to leave a mark on the international stage. With their rigorous training and dedication, there remains a bright future for these young athletes, who aim to inspire future generations of netball players in Fiji.
