Poama Qaqa propelled Team Fiji’s ascent in the medal standings during the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau with a notable performance in weightlifting, garnering three medals. The 28-year-old from Gau secured two silver medals in the men’s 71kg snatch and total categories, alongside a bronze in the clean and jerk.
Reflecting on his achievement, Qaqa expressed heartfelt gratitude, dedicating his medals to his family, particularly his daughter, who has been a steadfast source of support throughout his training journey in Levuka. “At my age, I hardly trained unlike my teammates. I’ve only just returned to the sport but nothing is impossible,” he shared emotionally as he celebrated his comeback.
In conjunction with Qaqa’s success, Team Fiji flagbearer Kelera Mudunasoko brought further excitement by winning her second gold medal in the women’s 100 meters breaststroke final, setting a new national record with a time of 1 minute 12.01 seconds. Earlier, Mudunasoko had also set a national record in the women’s 50m breaststroke, securing her first gold medal in that event.
Samuel Yalimaiwai also contributed with a second gold medal, finishing first in the men’s 100m breaststroke final while having previously won gold in the 50m breaststroke where he set a national benchmark.
In Para Table Tennis, the dynamic duo of Akanisi Latu and Merewalesi Roden captured gold after a narrow 3-2 victory over Tahiti. Additionally, Elenoa Vateitei claimed gold by showcasing her strength in the Va’a V1 16km marathon. Swimmer Tolu Young earned a silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly, accompanied by Hansel McCaig who secured bronze in the same event. Don Younger added to the medal haul with a bronze in the men’s 100m breaststroke final.
Following an impressive day, Team Fiji’s medal tally surged, propelling them from seventh to third place in the overall standings with six gold, eleven silver, and eleven bronze medals. The achievements thus far reflect the athletes’ hard work and dedication, reinforcing a sense of community pride back home and raising hopes for continued success as the competition progresses until July 9.
