Eight players from Fiji’s men’s sevens extended squad have been chosen to compete for the Mike Friday Select Sevens team at the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament next week. These players were nominated by head coach Osea Kolinisau and include Viliame Naikausa, Rubeni Kabu, Suliano Volivoli, Jope Tikomailepanoni, Iliavi Masori, Sakiusa Siqila, Rauto Vakadranu, and Alipate Biu.
Joining them will be notable players such as Jerry Tuwai, former Ireland captain Harry McNulty, USA’s Matai Leuta, and Rosko Specman. Tournament organizing committee chairman Jay Whyte mentioned that this Select Sevens team is a new addition to the tournament, highlighting its international appeal with players like Luke Treharne from Wales and Alexandre Odinga from France also participating.
The eight selected players see this tournament as an opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially secure a spot in the men’s squad for the HSBC SVSN Perth Sevens tournament scheduled for January 24 to 26. The Coral Coast 7s will take place over three days, from January 16 to 18, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
This tournament not only emphasizes the growth of rugby sevens in Fiji but also serves as a platform for emerging talent to gain recognition on an international stage. It’s a promising opportunity for these athletes to shine, contributing to the rich legacy of Fijian rugby.
