Fiji’s Rising Star: Will Komainaiqoro Bring Home the Gold?

YAT Sen Secondary School student Waisiki Komainaiqoro is passionately preparing to secure a gold medal for his school in the forthcoming 2025 Coca-Cola Games after a commendable performance, earning a silver medal in the Senior Boys Triple Jump at the Suva Zone Two meet held yesterday at HFC Bank Stadium.

The 18-year-old athlete from Koro Island faced challenging competition but relished the opportunity to showcase his talent among skilled athletes from various schools. “The competition was tough, and although our team did not perform as expected, I am grateful that many of us have a chance to take part in this year’s Coca-Cola Games,” Komainaiqoro shared.

Prepared and motivated, Komainaiqoro aims for gold as he participates in two events this year, under the watchful eye of his coach, Albert Miller. “Getting a gold medal for my school is my focus this year, as this is my final year in school,” he expressed. Although he has more experience in long jump, he is looking forward to competing in the triple jump as a new challenge.

He acknowledges the support he receives from his family, coach, and teachers, which has played a vital role in his development as an athlete. The spirit of determination seen in Komainaiqoro’s journey resonates with many young athletes in Fiji, such as Eroni Tuinaceva from Koro Island, who also recently shared his excitement about competing in the Coca-Cola Games after winning gold at the John Wesley College inter-house competition.

This collective ambition among young Fijian athletes is inspiring, demonstrating that through hard work, teamwork, and community support, they can achieve great things in athletics. Komainaiqoro’s dedication coupled with the backing of his peers and coaches paints a hopeful picture for the future of sports in Fiji, fostering a growing culture of excellence and resilience among youth athletes.
