Fiji’s Rising Star: Will Karawalevu Join the Drua?

Fiji’s national rugby team, the Flying Fijians, has praised fullback Vuate Karawalevu for his impressive defensive skills and precise kicking during their recent win over Samoa. The Fijian Drua head coach, Glen Jackson, indicated that Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, may join the Drua for the upcoming season.

Karawalevu, 23, a former captain of Marist Brothers High School rugby and gold medalist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics, previously played for the Kaiviti Silktails and represented Fiji Bati in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under contract with the Waratahs for two seasons.

Jackson highlighted that 14 players from the Drua were part of the victorious Flying Fijians squad against Samoa, showcasing the talent within the team. Fiji dominated Samoa with a 42-16 victory in their first Pacific Nations Cup match at HFC Bank Stadium on August 23.

Looking ahead, Jackson announced that the Drua will hold their pre-season camp in Kadavu and mentioned plans to renovate their base for a better training environment. The return of Joseva Tamani, versatile in both back row and lock positions, adds depth to the club.

Recent signings for the Drua include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou. Jackson commended Ravai’s experience as a mentor for the front row and noted that the new center pairing of Iosefo Masi and Tabuavou is promising. Tabuavou, who demonstrated impressive skills in his second test against Samoa, is expected to make a significant impact.

Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to make it an international event involving Skipper teams.
