Watisoni Naqau, a 21-year-old from Votua village in Lekutu, Bua, has been chosen as one of the referees for the 2024 Oceania 7s tournament, scheduled for December 7-8 in Honiara, Solomon Islands. This significant appointment marks Naqau’s debut on the international officiating stage.

Naqau’s journey into the world of sports officiating began in his youth while attending Lekutu Primary and Secondary Schools. His love for rugby was sparked by watching local club matches in Bua, where he developed a keen interest in the referees and their management of the games. “I started watching the officials and following them around to learn how they managed the games,” he reflected on his early inspirations.

His talent did not go unnoticed, and he was invited by the Fiji Rugby Referees Association to take a certification course in refereeing. This opportunity launched his officiating career. “I was fortunate to be invited by Fiji Rugby officials to undergo a course for certification in refereeing,” Naqau stated.

Aiming high, Naqau was motivated by seeing Fijian referees successfully officiate at international events, inspiring him to dream of one day joining them. “I had always admired the referees from Fiji officiating overseas and set my mind on doing that as well in the not-so-distant future,” he said.

Since obtaining his certification, Naqau has gained valuable experience officiating in local competitions, including the Vodafone Vanua Cup, Skipper Cup, and Fiji Bitter 7s series. These opportunities have helped him bolster his confidence and refine his officiating skills, setting the stage for his participation in the upcoming Oceania 7s tournament.

Grateful for the support he has received, Naqau expressed his appreciation for the Fiji Rugby Referees Association: “I thank them for believing in my ability and giving me the chance to move onto a regional competition. I look forward to even bigger opportunities in the near future.”

Naqau’s selection not only highlights his talent and hard work but also represents an inspiring pathway for young athletes in Fiji aiming for success in sports officiating.

This prestigious opportunity demonstrates that dedication and passion can lead to remarkable achievements, encouraging others to pursue their dreams in the world of sports.
