Fiji is emerging as a significant player in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector, driven by a highly literate population, a youthful workforce, and a strong command of the English language. This strategic positioning was underscored by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, during a recent virtual briefing coordinated by Matchboard in partnership with Pepper Advantage Fiji.

Kamikamica noted that the current BPO workforce of around 8,000 individuals is anticipated to grow substantially, with a goal of creating 25,000 new jobs within the next five to ten years. He described the BPO industry as a transformative sector that not only generates employment but also contributes significantly to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

The growth of this sector has accelerated, particularly during the pandemic, when Fiji maintained operations while other nations faced shutdowns. This resilience plays a crucial role in the government’s efforts to diversify the economy beyond reliance on tourism and agriculture.

In related discussions, leaders within the outsourcing industry, such as Sagufta Janif, Executive Director of Outsourcing Fiji, have emphasized the importance of fostering an inclusive and innovative environment to attract international business. During an event in Geneva, Janif highlighted initiatives that have led to increased job opportunities and a sustainable economic framework within Fiji.

Moreover, plans to enhance the country’s digital connectivity, including projects like the forthcoming Google link, are expected to further bolster the BPO sector. Such advancements will not only improve connectivity but also empower women, who comprise approximately 70% of the outsourcing workforce, enabling them to participate more fully in the digital economy.

The outlook for Fiji’s outsourcing industry remains positive, marked by collaborative efforts between the government and private sector to build a more robust economic landscape. With the potential for significant job creation and skills development, Fiji is well on its way to becoming a premier destination for BPO services in the Pacific region.
