Fiji’s Rising Star: The Dual Life of a Weightlifting Champion and Student

Miriama Taletawa, the 2023 Sports Woman of the Year from Fiji, is navigating the challenges of balancing her commitment to weightlifting with her university studies. At just 19 years old, she is managing an intense training schedule that consists of two to three sessions daily, making her academic responsibilities even more demanding.

Taletawa has spent the past five years making significant strides in the national weightlifting scene. She highlighted her achievements, including a bronze medal at the 2023 Oceania Under-23 Junior and Youth Championship in Samoa and a silver medal at the Commonwealth Championship held in Suva last year. Her impressive performance even earned her a spot on Team Fiji at the 2023 Pacific Games.

Despite her accolades, Taletawa admits that the transition from high school to university has been a challenge, stating, “While I managed to balance both my education and training in high school, it has become much tougher now.” To juggle these responsibilities, she sometimes prioritizes her assignments over training sessions, emphasizing her determination to succeed in both academics and sports.

Her perseverance is complemented by the support of her teammates, who encourage her through the ups and downs of her journey. She recounted how her peers motivated her when the pressure of balancing schoolwork and training seemed overwhelming.

Additionally, Taletawa’s recent accolades build on her ongoing recognition in the weightlifting community, including her title as Fiji Sportswoman of the Year, underscoring her status as a role model for young athletes.

Looking ahead, Taletawa is focused on enhancing her skills and preparing for future competitions, demonstrating the spirit and resilience that she embodies as a young athlete. Her dedication serves as an inspiration, illustrating that with hard work and determination, it is possible to balance multiple commitments effectively.
