In just over a year since arriving in France, 18-year-old Setareki Turagacoke has quickly established himself in the rugby world. The former Lelean Memorial School student made his Top 14 debut this season and recently earned his first cap with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians.
Turagacoke was called up as a last-minute replacement for the injured Isoa Nasilasila, making a significant impact in his debut match. He was one of five players who scored tries in Fiji’s 33-19 victory against Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid.
Head coach Mick Byrne praised the team’s patience, remarking on their performance as they came back from a 7-10 deficit at halftime. The team initially struggled to maintain possession but adjusted their strategy to score four unanswered tries in the second half. Caleb Muntz, who converted four of the five tries, played a crucial role, and other try scorers included Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
Byrne emphasized the importance of sticking to their game plan and maintaining composure after a challenging first half, where errors occurred and opportunities were missed. He reflected on the need for improved handling and discipline during plays.
Looking ahead, Fiji is set to face Ireland at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday, a significant challenge as the two teams have met only five times previously, with Fiji yet to secure a victory. In their last encounter, Ireland prevailed with a score of 35-17.
Despite the challenges, captain Nayacalevu expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, recognizing the physical and dynamic nature of Spanish rugby. The team enjoyed their experience at the stadium and is poised for their upcoming match against a strong opponent.
This young talent’s rapid ascent in rugby demonstrates the promise of Fiji’s sports future, along with a strong coaching strategy that encourages resilience and adaptability in the face of formidable competitors.
Summary: Setareki Turagacoke has made a significant impact in rugby in just over a year in France, debuting in both Top 14 and as a Test player for Fiji. Despite challenges in their win against Spain, Coach Mick Byrne and captain Waisea Nayacalevu remain optimistic as they prepare to face Ireland, reflecting the growth of young players in Fijian rugby.
