In just over a year since his arrival in France, Setareki Turagacoke, an 18-year-old rugby player from Fiji, has quickly established himself on the international stage. Formerly a student at Lelean Memorial School, Turagacoke made his debut in the Top 14 league and earned his first cap with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians during a recent match.

Turagacoke was a last-minute addition to the team, stepping in for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila. In his debut match, he contributed significantly to Fiji’s 33-19 victory against Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, scoring one of the five tries during the game. The native of Dakuinuku, Sawakasa, who has maternal ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, showcased his rising talent on this notable platform.

Head coach Mick Byrne emphasized the importance of patience, which ultimately led to their success. Despite trailing 7-10 at halftime, the team rallied in the second half, scoring four tries without conceding. The try scorers in addition to Turagacoke included Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu. Byrne noted that their strategy of maintaining possession was crucial, admitting that errors during the first half hampered their performance.

Fiji’s upcoming match against Ireland will be highly anticipated, especially considering that the two teams have met only five times previously, with Ireland winning every encounter. Their last meeting in 2022 saw Ireland defeat the Flying Fijians 35-17. Despite the tough history, captain Nayacalevu expressed confidence in their preparation and readiness to face the challenges posed by Spanish rugby, highlighting the team’s physical fitness and the enjoyment they found in playing at the stadium.

This rapid rise for Turagacoke and the team’s competitive spirit signals a promising future for Fiji rugby, showcasing the potential for growth and success against formidable opponents like Ireland.

In summary, Setareki Turagacoke’s recent achievements exemplify the bright prospects for young talents from Fiji as they make waves on the global rugby front. The Flying Fijians’ determination and positive gameplay could very well turn the tide in their favor in their upcoming match.
