In just over a year in France, Setareki Turagacoke, an 18-year-old former student of Lelean Memorial School, has quickly gained recognition in the rugby world. This year, he made his debut in the Top 14 and also earned his first international Test cap with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians during their recent match against Spain.
Turagacoke was a late addition to the team, stepping in for the injured Isoa Nasilasila. During the game held at José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, he stood out as one of five try scorers in Fiji’s impressive 33-19 victory. The Dakuinuku native, who has ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, played a key role in the win.
Fiji head coach Mick Byrne emphasized the importance of patience that led to their success. Although his team was trailing 7-10 at halftime with only one try scored by Ponipate Loganimasi, they regrouped in the second half, scoring four consecutive tries. Caleb Muntz successfully converted four of the five attempts, with contributions from Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
Byrne noted the need for better ball handling in the first half, where they struggled with possession and made several errors. However, his focus on the team’s resilience and ability to adjust in the second half highlights the potential for growth.
Fiji is set to face Ireland in their final Test match at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday at 3:10 am. This match will mark only the sixth meeting between the two teams, with Ireland currently holding a 5-0 advantage from their previous encounters, including a 35-17 win in the 2022 Autumn Series.
Captain Nayacalevu commented on the preparation for the match, acknowledging the physical and dynamic nature of Spanish rugby, which shaped their approach. He expressed excitement at the opportunity to compete at the stadium, signaling a positive outlook for the team’s future endeavors.
As the Flying Fijians prepare to take on a challenging opponent, there is hope for a strong performance that could turn the tide in their favor against Ireland, marking a new chapter in their rugby journey.
