Fiji’s Rising Star Set for Test Debut in Pacific Nations Cup Showdown

Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is expected to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka. This opportunity arose after head coach Mick Byrne announced Ilaisa Droasese would replace Epeli Momo on the wing, allowing Loganimasi to be included on the bench.

Byrne commented on Loganimasi’s impressive training, expressing hope that the Olympic silver medalist would get his chance to shine. The competition for spots within the team has been fierce, with rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni also making their way back into the squad. Vocevoce did not participate in the semi-final victory over the USA due to a personal loss, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.

Byrne noted the challenging weather conditions, describing the current heat and humidity, but emphasized that the team is organized and focused on performing well. Despite some players dealing with injuries, the overall morale remains high. He highlighted Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula’s strong performance at fullback, and the team’s primary focus is now on the upcoming final against Japan, scheduled to kick off at 10:05 PM.
