Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is expected to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup grand final against Japan at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka.
Coach Mick Byrne announced last night that Ilaisa Droasese will take the place of Epeli Momo on the wing, which has cleared the way for Loganimasi to be included on the bench.
“His training has been impressive, and he looks fantastic,” Byrne commented last weekend, expressing his hope to give the Olympic silver medalist an opportunity to debut in the Test match.
Byrne noted the competitive atmosphere among players vying for positions in the 23-man squad. Additionally, rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni have secured their places after missing the semi-final against the USA due to personal reasons and injury, respectively.
Vocevoce was absent from the semi-final due to the passing of his father, while Tuni is stepping in for the injured Peni Ravai.
“Preparation has gone well; the weather has been hot and humid,” Byrne stated, emphasizing the team’s organization and readiness for their performance.
He remarked that the training intensity had been maintained with players conserving their energy for the match. Despite some players managing minor injuries, such as Peni Ravai and Selestino Ravutaumada, the team remains resilient.
Byrne highlighted the strong performance of Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula at fullback, focusing solely on the upcoming match against Japan, which kicks off at 10:05 p.m.
