Samuela Vunivalu’s journey from a curious child to a national athlete for Fiji is inspiring as he prepares to compete in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau. At just 20 years old, Vunivalu began his athletics career at the age of nine with a long jump event while attending Nawaka District School. His initial curiosity quickly transformed into a passion for the sport, and he has collected numerous medals since his under-9 division.
Having been selected to represent Nadi in various competitions, Vunivalu has consistently performed well, securing gold medals at the Chow Games in multiple categories. Although COVID-19 interrupted his participation in athletics during crucial years at Natabua High School, Vunivalu rebounded by excelling once again in Year 11 and onwards, achieving a remarkable jump of 6.74 meters during trials, surpassing the Mini Games’ qualifying standard of 6.50 meters.
Vunivalu expressed gratitude for the support of his family, which he credits as a key motivator in his pursuit of both academics and athletics. He is currently a student at the University of Fiji in Lautoka, skillfully managing both his studies and training schedules.
This will be Vunivalu’s second time representing Fiji, having previously earned a bronze medal at the Oceania Championship. His dedication and strong family support, particularly from his parents, afford him the encouragement he needs to strive for gold in the Mini Games.
The Pacific Mini Games are set to take place from June 29 to July 9 in Koror, Palau. Vunivalu’s story resonates with that of other young Fijian athletes, such as Keleni Samantha Lutu and Naibili Vatunisolo, highlighting a spirit of resilience, community support, and the pursuit of excellence in sports across the nation.
With the growing emphasis on athletic development and recent successes among athletes, Fiji’s representation in international competitions holds great potential for future accomplishments and national pride. Vunivalu, alongside his peers, embodies the hope and determination that continues to flourish in Fijian athletics.
