Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, is eager to represent Fiji at the upcoming Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled from January 17-20, 2025. This esteemed event gathers youth leaders from around the world, providing them with a platform to discuss and propose solutions to pressing global issues.
Excitement surrounds Sakiusa as this opportunity marks his first experience representing Fiji in such a significant event. Hailing from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira, Kadavu, he expressed, “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal.”
His selection was based on a short essay he wrote addressing various social problems in Fiji, including domestic violence, rising drug-related issues, and the loss of cultural heritage. He noted, “I expressed my opinion on how attending the International MUN conference can mould me into a productive and inspiring leader.”
To facilitate his journey, Sakiusa’s parents have invested U.S. $779 (FJ$1785) to cover his hotel accommodation, transportation, and meals during the event. Looking ahead, he aspires to pursue a medical degree with a specialization in non-communicable diseases upon his return.
This story highlights not only Sakiusa’s achievements but also the importance of youth engagement in global discussions, promising a future filled with potential leaders eager to tackle the world’s challenges.
