Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, is eagerly anticipating his upcoming role as a representative for Fiji at the Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 17-20, 2025. This annual event draws aspiring youth leaders from around the globe, allowing them to exchange ideas and collaborate on addressing significant global challenges.
Sakiusa, who hails from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira in Kadavu, expresses his enthusiasm as this marks his first opportunity to represent Fiji at such an event. He views his selection amidst thousands of applicants as a significant milestone, stating, “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal.”
His candidacy was solidified when he submitted an essay discussing pressing social issues in Fiji, including domestic violence, rising cases of illicit drugs, and cultural erosion, and their societal repercussions. “I expressed my opinion on how attending the International MUN conference can mold me into a productive and inspiring leader,” Sakiusa noted.
The financial support for his trip, totaling USD $779 (FJD $1785), has been provided by his parents to cover accommodations, transportation, and food expenses. Sakiusa has aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine, with a focus on non-communicable diseases upon his return.
This opportunity not only highlights the importance of youth engagement in global discussions but also serves as an inspiring example for young individuals in Fiji and beyond, showing how determination and a voice can lead to greater involvement in international affairs. His experience may inspire others to explore similar opportunities, fostering a new generation of leaders dedicated to making a positive impact on society.
