Fiji’s lightweight boxing champion Mikaele Ravalaca is preparing for a significant title fight scheduled for July 19, where he will contend for the vacant New Zealand Professional Boxing Commission (NZPBC) super featherweight title against Kiwi boxer Ross Malthus. The event will take place under the Kings Boxing Promotion banner in Suva, with the collaboration of the NZPBC confirmed by promoter Nahroon Buksh and PBCNZ president Ioana Schwalger.

The 22-year-old Ravalaca, also known as ‘High Voltage,’ is eager to build on his previous achievements, which include winning the Fiji lightweight title earlier this year by defeating Mohammed Ali in just 45 seconds of the second round. This upcoming fight represents an important opportunity for Ravalaca to showcase his skills against an international opponent, a step he is keenly aware could elevate his career.

“I’m committed to my training, ensuring I reach the level that is expected of me and give my supporters and sponsor a good fight,” Ravalaca stated, reiterating his dedication to the sport and his gratitude towards those who have supported him, especially his long-time sponsor, Fresh’et.

Trainer Nesta Ranuku views this bout as a critical momentum builder for Ravalaca’s career. Ravalaca’s previous engagements include successful matches in Australia, where he demonstrated his capabilities against seasoned opponents with a current professional record of six wins, five of which were achieved by knockout.

Malthus, Ravalaca’s opponent, has a professional history that includes two wins out of six fights and is coming off a victory over Zain Adams, who is notable for defeating Fiji’s featherweight champion, Junior Binnu Singh.

This highly anticipated title fight is set against a backdrop of renewed interest and investment in the boxing scene in Fiji. The Kings Boxing Promotions event also serves as the undercard for the heavyweight title fight, which adds to the grandeur of the night.

The matchup not only highlights Ravalaca’s growth as a fighter but also presents an inspiring narrative for young athletes in Fiji, reinforcing the idea that talent, hard work, and dedication can lead to opportunities on larger stages. As the local boxing community rallies around this event, there is a shared optimism for the future of boxing in Fiji, promising thrilling action and a chance for young fighters to shine.
