Moreen Ram, a mother who has transitioned into an entrepreneur and rice farmer, was recognized as the Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) at the 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony held by Fiji Rice Limited in Labasa. The 35-year-old was filled with emotion as she received her award from the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Ram expressed her pride in this accomplishment and urged other women to consider rice farming as a viable business opportunity. Residing in Muanidevo, Dreketi, she has dedicated the last seven years to developing her rice farming venture, with strong support from her husband, a civil servant who makes time to assist her on the farm.

Motivated by her family’s long-standing tradition in rice farming, Ram shared that the expertise was passed down from her parents. As the new planting season approaches in November, she has set a goal to harvest seven tonnes of rice paddy. Despite facing challenges related to drainage and access to harvesting equipment in the past, these issues have been addressed through a cooperative system that allows farmers to share resources.

Ram highlighted that rice farming can be financially rewarding, noting a price increase from $850 to $1000 per tonne last December, which has encouraged farmers to stay in the industry. She plans to apply for subsidies for planting and weed management to enhance her operations further.

Encouraging women to venture into rice farming, she stated that while it may appear challenging, determination can lead to success. Ram’s ultimate aspiration is to become the best farmer in Fiji, emphasizing the potential that women have to achieve their goals with commitment.
