Fifteen-year-old Iris Rae Bentley Fisher is excitedly preparing for her debut in the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, where she will represent Fiji as part of the national Outrigger Va’a team. Fisher’s introduction to the sport came two years ago, inspired by her cousin who shared stories of her experiences connecting with the ocean. This led Iris to join a local club, where she discovered the joy of paddling on the water.

In her journey as a Va’a athlete, Fisher has described the exhilaration of being out in nature and the thrill of encountering marine life, such as manta rays and turtles. She emphasizes the importance of understanding weather conditions and mastering different paddling techniques, especially as the competition approaches. “We have to learn how to paddle upwind, sideways, crosswind, downwind,” she explained, highlighting the team’s adaptability amidst the challenges of training.

As part of Team Fiji, Fisher has not only been honing her skills but also building friendships with her teammates, fostering a sense of camaraderie that she values immensely. “These friendships, they’ll go on for a long time,” she expressed, showing her enthusiasm for the bonds formed through shared experiences.

Fisher also openly shares her methods for managing pre-competition nerves, which involve a blend of mental focus and prayer. This insight into her preparation speaks to the mental resilience that young athletes like her cultivate, transforming anxiety into determination as they approach their competitive events.

The upcoming Mini Games, scheduled for June 29 to July 9, represent not just a personal milestone for Fisher but also a broader wave of hope for young athletes in Fiji. Alongside her, other athletes are preparing to showcase their dedication to their sports and their country. This collective effort embodies the community spirit that is encouraging to see, as it highlights a generation dedicated to excelling on international stages.

The anticipated glory of the Pacific Mini Games symbolizes a future brimming with promise, as young athletes take to the waters and fields, ready to make their mark and inspire others in their pursuit of excellence.
