Fiji’s Rising Star: Meet the Teen Captain Redefining Women’s Football

Sixteen-year-old Annie May, captain of the Fiji Women’s U-16 team, is filled with pride as she gears up for her second appearance at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship taking place in Suva, Fiji.

Leading her young team, May finds it both a privilege and an exhilarating experience to play before a home crowd that includes family and friends. “It’s an honor to be part of the squad and to captain the team. It’s incredible to represent the country with your mum, dad, and the home crowd watching,” shared the Savusavu native.

May also highlighted the strong camaraderie within the team, especially during challenging moments. “The girls are doing pretty well in camp. Whenever they feel homesick, we always come together and support each other,” she stated.

Reflecting on her path to football, May noted that her initial passion was rugby, a popular sport in her community. “Growing up, I only watched rugby, but I don’t have the physique to play at that level, so I decided to try football and it turned out to be amazing.”

She expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from her family and community, which has been crucial to her athletic journey. “My parents, village, grandparents, and friends have always been supportive,” May concluded, acknowledging the encouragement that has motivated her to advance in her career.
