Merewalesi Kolitapa is making waves in the sporting world, recently receiving dual nominations for the Young Female of the Year category at the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards. Her nominations come from her prowess in both the Australian Football League (AFL) and the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association, underscoring her versatility as an athlete.
Expressing her excitement over the nominations, Kolitapa described the experience as both joyous and nerve-wracking. “I was a bit nervous when I was standing up there and receiving these two awards at one time,” she shared, stressing her gratitude and the crucial role her support system plays in her athletic journey. “The squad at home, they’re my number one squad, so I’m really blessed to have such a blessing and family life that supports me in the sport.”
Kolitapa’s achievements aren’t just personal milestones; they also highlight the growing strength of women in sports that have traditionally been male-dominated, like amateur boxing. She emphasizes the notion that participating in these sports empowers women and helps break down gender barriers. “It doesn’t differentiate if we are women and playing a man’s sport,” Kolitapa stated. “It will make us stronger.”
This year, Kolitapa also has the opportunity to represent Fiji at the Australian Club Championships in Adelaide in May, further showcasing her talent and commitment.
Kolitapa’s story is not unlike that of other young female athletes from Fiji, such as Miriama Taletawa, who was named the 2023 Sportswoman of the Year. Taletawa, just like Kolitapa, has had to navigate her own challenges and triumphs in a sport that requires both physical and mental fortitude, illustrating a remarkable pattern of resilience and dedication among Fiji’s young athletes.
As Kolitapa continues her journey, her dedication serves as an inspiration for future generations, encouraging them to pursue their passions in sports and beyond, showing that with enough support and determination, they too can achieve greatness.
