Ponipate Loganimasi, a debutant for the Flying Fijians, made a significant impact by scoring two tries in their 41-17 victory over Japan, securing the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday.
Loganimasi entered the game during the second half and contributed a try in the 59th minute, increasing Fiji’s lead to 18-10. His second try came in the 74th minute, followed by a successful conversion from Isaiah Armstrong Ravula, solidifying their championship win.
Originally named as a substitute for Selestino Ravutaumada, who is recovering from surgery, Loganimasi took full advantage of the opportunity.
Fiji’s coach Mick Byrne commended Loganimasi’s performance, stating that his inclusion in the lineup provided a chance to showcase his skills. “Ponipate was there, and an opportunity came, ironically, through Selestino’s injury,” Byrne noted. “He had a great debut, and we look forward to the career ahead of him.”
Byrne also mentioned that Iosefo Masi had recommended Loganimasi to replace Ravutaumada. When questioned about Loganimasi’s size, Byrne expressed confidence in the player’s physique and potential. “I think he has a great size and, as a young player, he’s got a great frame to build on and a bright future ahead,” he said.
