Young Fiji footballer Penisoni Tirau is making headlines on the international stage after being selected among 14 local players for the Fijian squad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. This promising young talent recently made his senior debut at the Prime Ministers Cup in the Solomon Islands in December and will now represent Fiji in the crucial semi-final against New Zealand’s All Whites in Wellington on March 21.
Head coach Rob Sherman has included Rewa’s Epeli Valevou, who has shown impressive form for his club, in a squad that merges emerging talents with experienced players. The team will expand to 20 members with the addition of six players, including Thomas Dunn and Sterling Vasconcellos from Eastern Suburbs. After trials for eight more players in New Zealand, the final squad will be confirmed.
In preparation, Fiji will play three warm-up matches before taking on New Zealand. The eagerly awaited match against the All Whites will kick off at 6 PM, following a previous game where New Caledonia meets Tahiti at 2 PM.
This selection reflects a determined effort from the Fiji national team to blend their local talent with players from overseas, which is hopeful for the country’s chances in the qualifiers as they gear up for an exciting challenge ahead. Fans can look forward to seeing Tirau’s contributions on the field as Fiji aims to solidify its presence in international football.
