In an inspiring development for Fijian athletics, Glen Finau, an up-and-coming hammer thrower representing Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games, is eager to learn and perfect his technique under the guidance of esteemed mentor Deborah Bulai, a gold medalist and national record holder in the sport. As part of the Ignite Camp designed for Team Fiji athletes, Finau has found his sessions with Bulai both intriguing and enlightening.

The 18-year-old, a student at Suva Grammar School, first discovered his interest in hammer throw through YouTube videos and solidified his passion during a previous athletics camp. His enthusiasm has encouraged him to reach out to his coach for further refinement in his skills. Despite finding the sport challenging initially, Finau is steadily improving, showcasing his determination and resilience.

“My family has been supportive, despite some initial mixed feelings about my choice of sport,” Finau shared, reflecting the importance of community in fostering young athletes’ aspirations. He has competed in the Fiji Finals for the past four years and aims to make a significant impact on the international stage, particularly during the upcoming games in Palau.

This narrative resonates with the broader context of Fiji’s preparations for the Pacific Mini Games, where numerous athletes are gearing up for international competition. Recent trials have demonstrated a surge in interest and participation, highlighting a deep-rooted commitment among young athletes to excel and represent Fiji proudly. Coaches and sports organizations are working diligently to support athletes, ensuring they have the necessary resources and encouragement to hone their skills.

As Fiji comes together to showcase its athletic talent in the Pacific Mini Games scheduled for June, there is palpable excitement and hope for success. With the dedication of emerging athletes like Finau and the backing of experienced mentors, Fiji is ready to aim high on the international sports stage.
