Akosita Poulter expressed deep emotion upon winning a silver medal in the senior girls’ shot put event for Tailevu North College, achieving a throw of 11.39 meters. In her victory speech, she dedicated the medal to her late father, John Randall Poulter, sharing her pride in representing not only her school but also her family and community.
In addition to her achievements in shot put, this 18-year-old athlete is also a member of the women’s national cricket team, which secured third place during a recent tour to New Caledonia for the Pacific-France T20 championship. Reflecting on her preparation, Poulter noted the intensity of training with just one week to ready herself for the Fiji finals after the Tailevu Zone, yet she expressed satisfaction with the effort everyone put in.
Poulter emphasized the values instilled by her family, including putting God first and listening to her elders. Balancing academics and sports, she is not only focusing on her athletic career but also considering options in mechanical engineering. Her participation in rugby, playing both as a Lock in rugby union and as a Prop for the Lami Steelers in Rugby League, highlights her versatility as an athlete.
“I would also like to dedicate this medal to my cricket team as well because most of them were also high school students,” she added, reinforcing the importance of community and teamwork in her journey.
Poulter’s story is uplifting, symbolizing the spirit of determination and resilience found within the youth of Fiji. Along with fellow athletes like Maryann Macedru, who excelled in shot put, Poulter’s achievements inspire many, showcasing a supportive environment that cultivates talent and ambition amongst young sportspeople in Fiji. Her optimistic perspective encourages her peers to adopt a similar mindset: “With whatever you do, always be positive, think positively, and keep on pushing until you achieve your goals.”
This narrative of perseverance and dedication among young athletes paints a hopeful picture for the future of sports in Fiji, fostering community pride and inspiring the next generation to strive for greatness in both academics and athletics.
