In just 14 months in France, Setareki Turagacoke, an 18-year-old former student of Lelean Memorial School, has rapidly made a significant impact in the rugby world. This year, he marked his debut in the Top 14 and received his first Test cap for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians.

Turagacoke was a last-minute addition to the team, stepping in for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila. Hailing from Dakuinuku in Sawakasa, he contributed notably to the team’s 33-19 victory over Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, where he was one of five players who scored tries.

Head coach Mick Byrne emphasized the importance of patience in securing the win. At halftime, Fiji found themselves trailing 7-10, having only managed a single try through Ponipate Loganimasi. However, in the second half, they rallied back, scoring four unanswered tries, with Caleb Muntz successfully converting four of the five tries. Other scorers included Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.

Byrne noted that the team’s strategy was communicated during halftime: “Patience and stick to our game.” He acknowledged the challenges faced in the first half, including a lack of possession and errors when they had the ball. “We needed to be cleaner,” he remarked, reflecting on the team’s performance.

Looking ahead, Fiji will compete against Ireland in their final Test match at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, this Sunday at 3:10 a.m. This meeting will mark only the sixth time these teams have faced each other, with Ireland having won all five previous matches. In their last encounter during the 2022 Autumn Series, Ireland triumphed over the Flying Fijians 35-17.

Captain Waisea Nayacalevu expressed respect for Spanish rugby, recognizing its dynamic, quick, and physical nature. He stated that the team’s preparation focused on being physically fit, and he shared the joy of playing at the stadium.

This young talent’s rise in the rugby scene demonstrates the potential for emerging athletes to make a significant mark on the international stage. As Turagacoke and his teammates prepare for the challenge against Ireland, fans are hopeful that they will continue to improve and showcase their skills, potentially changing the narrative in their upcoming encounters.
