Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team in an upcoming tournament, marking an exciting milestone in her athletic career. At just 22 years of age, Qalo hails from Nadogo in Saqani and has maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove. She is one of the uncapped players in the squad, aiming to secure a place for the Dubai 7s competition next weekend.
Qalo’s journey to the national extended squad has been anything but easy. Having only taken up rugby two years ago with the Police rugby team, she later moved on to play for Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she expressed, emphasizing that wearing the national colors has been a long-held dream, despite the challenges she faced along the way.
The rigorous demands of training in a high-performance environment, including early mornings and intensive practices, tested her endurance. Nevertheless, Qalo credits her support system for keeping her motivated. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she said, acknowledging that she did not expect to be selected for the squad but is fully prepared to take on national responsibilities.
Qalo is a graduate of Nabua Secondary School and is also active in club netball, showcasing her versatile athletic talents. The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart for Dubai this weekend, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable teams like Australia, Ireland, and China.
This story underscores the inspiring journey of a young athlete making her mark on the national stage. It highlights the dedication required to pursue one’s dreams in sports and the importance of community support in achieving personal goals. With Qalo ready to take on this new challenge, there’s hope for a bright future for her and the Fiji women’s 7s team as they prepare for the competition.
