Alisi Neisulu has made significant strides toward her dream of joining the Fiji Pearls netball team, a journey that spans several years. The 18-year-old from Yavusania in Nadi, who also has strong connections to Natauloa, Narai in Lomaiviti, is one of five newcomers in the squad for the upcoming PacificAus Sports Netball Series.

Neisulu, currently a Year 13 student at Adi Cakobau School, was introduced to netball at an early age, often accompanying her grandmother to Sukuna Bowl training sessions designed for army wives, where she began shooting hoops. Her talent soon shone through as she represented her primary school and district, ultimately earning a spot in the national under-21 team at the age of 15.

Reflecting on her journey, Neisulu recalled being the youngest member in the Pearls’ extended squad, feeling the weight of expectations but expressing gratitude for the experience that has shaped her into a better player. Currently, she is a player for the Lomaiviti Netball Club and is thrilled about the opportunity to compete at the senior level.

“I’m excited every day when I go to training because there’s always something new to learn,” Neisulu stated. She emphasized her hard work and preparation for this moment, noting that she was not surprised by her selection but rather focused on consistent effort.

Intense training has been a hallmark of her preparation, including sessions against a men’s netball team to enhance her strength and resilience. Neisulu highlighted the team’s goal of improving communication both on and off the court while supporting each other during matches.

With aspirations to play professionally overseas, Neisulu is eager for the chance to compete against international teams, which she believes will further develop her skills. The Fiji Pearls are set to face several teams during the PacificAus Sports Netball Series, including Samoa, Scotland, Tonga, PPNG, and First Nations Australia, from February 17-22 at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

Neisulu’s journey serves as a beacon of hope for young aspiring athletes, illustrating that dedication, hard work, and the willingness to learn can pave the way to fulfilling one’s dreams. This opportunity not only highlights Neisulu’s potential but also strengthens the position of Fijian netball on the international stage.
