Fiji’s Rising Star: Aisea Buliruarua’s Musical Journey

As the Fijian music industry seeks global recognition, local artists of all ages are coming together to collaborate while maintaining a healthy spirit of competition.

One such artist is 22-year-old Aisea Buliruarua from Lomaiviti, a former member of the group Paradise Roots, who is now focused on realizing his potential. He emphasizes the importance of self-belief, even in solitude.

“Since I entered the music industry, my family and seasoned musicians have always encouraged me to believe in myself to achieve my ambitions,” Buliruarua shared.

Growing up, he never missed a family gathering, certain there would be a band performing, which inspired him to aspire to perform with a band himself. He realized part of that dream when he joined Paradise Roots, a stint he loved dearly.

His journey began with an audition suggested by a friend, Benjamin Amori, where the band’s manager, Setareki Baleirara, encouraged him to showcase his talent, transforming his dream into reality.

Buliruarua’s passion for music also blossomed during Sunday school, where he began learning guitar and ukulele at the age of 14. His family’s musical background greatly influenced his interest; music was a cornerstone of his upbringing.

He is a distant relative of the members of the popular early 2000s band Voqa ni Delai Dokidoki, known for hits like “Au mai Vakila” and “Sereki na Rarawa.” The band won the Best Performer Award in 1981, with Temo Soko Lote winning Best Composer a year later. Their influence was felt deeply as Buliruarua recalls spending time with them during family gatherings, leading him to discover his musical identity.

“I grew up listening to Dokidoki, but it was different for me,” he said. “I observed how they made music, how they wrote songs, and I performed with them on various occasions. This experience reaffirmed my ambition to achieve similar success in music.”

With the internet now playing a significant role in the industry by providing platforms for emerging artists, Buliruarua hopes for rapid growth in the Fijian music scene and looks forward to opportunities to showcase his talent further.
