Samuela Navitalai, the blue ribbon winner from Ratu Kadavulevu School, has made an unforgettable mark in his first attempt at the prestigious Coca-Cola Games. The 18-year-old athlete, hailing from Matacaucau Village in Namalata, Tailevu, shared that running was not something he pursued until now; he had previously enjoyed watching the event as a spectator.

Navitalai expressed his excitement and gratitude for winning, stating, “I never ran; every year at the Coca-Cola Games, I used to just go and watch and support the schools.” Despite facing personal hardships that shaped his journey, he found motivation and learned valuable lessons that contributed to his success, attributing his strength and guidance to a higher power.

In a show of camaraderie and support, Navitalai dedicated his victory to the RKS Under-18 rugby team, who are currently on tour in Japan. He wished them well, hoping they return victorious so they could celebrate together.

This victory coincided with a broader narrative surrounding the Fiji Finals, which celebrates young athletic talent and community spirit, having recently marked its 50th anniversary. Similar to other notable performances at the games, such as those by Joseva Vuaira from Ratu Lalabalavu Secondary School and Samuela Tamanisau from Tavua College, Navitalai’s triumph highlights a culture of perseverance among Fijian youth. The excitement of these events continues to foster inspiration and hope for the future of athletics in Fiji, showcasing how young athletes are not just achieving personal success but are also encouraging their peers to pursue their dreams with tenacity.

The Coca-Cola Games serve as an important platform for youth, uniting schools and communities in support of their athletes. As these competitions flourish, they promise to spur future generations to thrive in sports, representing a positive outlook for the future of athletics in Fiji.
