Kemu Valetini, who scored the decisive penalty in his debut game for Drua against the Crusaders during Round 3 of the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, has quickly become a beloved figure among Fijians. Many have described him on social media as “a solid No.10,” “a natural first five eight,” and “a rising star,” reflecting his significant impact from semi-professional play to representing Drua.
At 29 years old and originally from Galoa, Kadavu, Valetini began his rugby journey with the Melbourne Rising in 2018. He spent the 2019-2020 season with Valladoid Rugby Asociación in Spain. His impressive performances in Manly led to a short-term contract with Drua.
Having trained with the Rebels in Australia, Valetini has gained valuable rugby knowledge and experience, aiming for continuous improvement both professionally and personally. However, he acknowledges a challenge: his struggle with the Fijian dialect. Growing up in Australia, he primarily spoke English, although his father communicated in Fijian.
Despite living in Fiji for over a year and a half, he has yet to visit Kadavu but plans to find the time. As preparations for the season commence, Valetini is eager to contribute to his team’s success.
When sharing more about himself, he humorously admits to a love for chicken curry and favors loose clothing. Describing his childhood, he recalls being adventurous and social. When asked about the most playful member of the team, he quickly mentions Peni Matawalu.
For Valetini, scoring tries and accurate kicking are crucial for his role in the team. He views kicking as essential, emphasizing the importance of taking one week at a time during the competition while maintaining fitness and health. He expresses gratitude for his current position and shares advice for young readers to listen to their parents, acknowledging their supportive role in his own journey.
